Abstract
Over half of Mexico’s electricity relies on United States gas imports, risking
its energy security. Achieving 45% clean generation by 2030 could cut gas imports for electricity by 20%, saving $1.6 billion USD per year.
This report presents an analysis of the dependence of electricity generation in Mexico on imported gas from the United States and estimates the costs that would be avoided by reducing gas imports under scenarios of 36% and 45% of clean energy generation by 2030, aligned with the National Strategy of the Power Sector.
The avoided cost estimate is based on projections made by Ember for the price of
natural gas.URL
