Abstract
Developed in collaboration with the European Commission and EU Member States, this regional energy transition outlook explores how renewables can accelerate emissions reductions, enhance energy affordability and boost industrial resilience across the countries of the European Union. With renewable power capacity projected to nearly triple by 2030, quadruple by 2040 and quintuple by 2050 compared to 2021 levels, the report emphasises the urgency of fast-tracking clean energy deployment and modernising infrastructure.

The report highlights key enablers of the transition: integrated energy planning, grid expansion, electrification and further market integration. It stresses the need for coordinated implementation, stronger governance and agile policy frameworks to address lagging progress in some Member States. Trade and diversified supply chains are also recognised as crucial tools for ensuring a fair and cost-effective energy transition.

Achieving a climate-compatible pathway will require decisive action. This includes scaling up investments in renewables, storage and smart grids; accelerating fossil fuel phase-down; and aligning industrial strategy with climate and energy goals. The EU is well-positioned to lead by example, demonstrating that sustainability, security and competitiveness can go hand in hand.
