Abstract
Approximately 95% of farmland in Sub-Saharan Africa and 60% in South Asia is rainfed, reliant on unpredictable weather patterns. Solar water pumps—a clean, modern irrigation solution—have the potential to increase yields by two to threefold, depending on crop and climate. This brief focuses on agricultural applications of small-scale solar-powered pumps able to irrigate one to five acres with access to surface water, such as streams, or access to groundwater from an underground well or borehole. These pumps may also be used to collect water for household or community uses; however, these applications are excluded from this brief.
