Experiences on dissemination or promotion of improved cooking stoves are numerous as stove projects have been carried out since the late 70ies all over the world, where biomass is the main fuel for cooking. Many of them have been evaluated by the implementing agency or by donors. One comprehensive evaluation has been done by the World Bank in 1994.[1] Through its department ESMAP the World Bank had also financed a number of energy programs including stove promotion activities during the 80ies and early 90ies. The thematic evaluation of successes and failures of the bank’s projects as well as those from GTZ and other implementers revealed main factors influencing positively or negatively the durability of stove projects. These factors are still of relevance to the present and have been taken into consideration by other donors and implementing agencies, such as GTZ.
