Name
Energy Efficiency in the grid-connected energy supply
Description
Utilizing energy more efficiently

The German development cooperation supports public institutions and entities to save energy and to utilize energy more efficient. Since 2014 numerous buildings in the western regions, such as kindergartens, schools and hospitals, have been thermo-technically rehabilitated through co-financing by the Swiss Development Cooperation. The success became quickly evident: “Before, my child was sick very often during winter time, but now she is eager to go to the kindergarten every day and she is seldom sick”, one mother says. A survey shows that the number of illness days among both children and staff has gone down by around 65%. The renovations also provide direct fuel consumption reductions by around 50%. Additional spin-off effects are reduced costs for parents for medical care, improved learning condition, reduced air pollution, etc.

An important step ahead to improve the efficient use of energy in Mongolia was the promulgation of the Energy Conservation Law in November 2015. German experts provided support to the development of the law. The law is the solid legal basis for cooperation with the largest energy consumers to improve technical and organizational processes to reduce the energy consumption. Currently Germany supports the implementation of the law, e.g. by trainings of energy managers and auditors. They should monitor and advice companies on more energy efficiency oriented design of the workflow and processes. In addition to providing advice in these areas, GIZ will also support the restructuring of the tariff systems and the overall financing of the energy sector.
